Scent & Style

Imagine your ideal home – you might be lucky enough to be sitting in it, but you probably have a good idea of what it might look like if you are not there just yet. But have you ever thought about what that home smells like?

If you picture a sleek modern Minimalist or Zen home with white walls and abundant sunlight, you might imagine a fresh scent, maybe a citric one, so it is not too sweet. If you imagine a more rustic environment, with russet tones and vintage wooden furniture, you might smell something earthier or muskier. Or maybe when you see your dream home it is all about a mixture of traditional Eastern interior design: you love the authenticity of true Persian rugs, traditional Indian handspun fabrics, and handmade mosaic accents –  and then maybe your home smells of fresh herbs and spices.

Your home says something about who you are as a person; what your general disposition and style is. Do you enjoy having knick-knacks around or are you all about clear and sleek surfaces? Do you prefer a classic color scheme or would you rather mix and match? There’s no wrong or right answer but you might find that the way you make style choices for your home is the way you make choices more generally in life. Different fragrances not only have the ability to lift your mood or make you more productive, but they have the capacity to reflect who you are and complement that very style.

Of course, style is not unchanging. But that is one of the outstanding characteristics of fragrance. Whether you or your home have a specific look, you can not only use fragrance to define that look, but you can use fragrance to change it as you see fit, or feel the need for variation, without a makeover or complete remodeling.

The saying by Maya Angelou goes “people may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” Not only do we agree here at Doctor Aromas, but we expand on this idea, going so far as to say that people will remember how you made them feel implicitly. Ever say hello to someone, and all you can think of is how great they smell, and not what pleasantries you’re exchanging? People may not remember exactly whether your couch was blue or red, or whether the pillows matched the rug or the coffee table, but they will remember how they felt when they walked in – and scent is the first thing people notice when walking into your home.

Dr. Alan Hirsch, the founder of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago takes this a step further, truly highlighting the power of a fragrance. He believes that people often make assumptions about others simply based on their scent – clean smell evokes success while more citric smells evoke a general disposition of happiness. All that to say, a great scent can leave an even better impression on who you are.

So, which scent defines your style?
