How to do Winter in Miami

If you relate cold weather, snowflakes, hot chocolate, and skiing with winter, then you might think that there’s no such thing as winter here in Miami. Instead of the cold, we have the tropics year-round, instead of skiing and building snowmen, we go out on boat adventures, and instead of hot chocolate, we have mimosas (can’t be too mad about that). Don’t know how to do winter properly in Miami? Keep reading, because we’ve got you covered!

Visit the Beaches:

One of the perks of living with everlasting tropical weather is that every day is beach day. Some people might say that the best time to go to the beach in Miami is winter (yes, you read that right) because it is neither too hot nor too cold, just perfect. The sun still shines and the water is refreshing. Also, there’s a beach for everyone. If you like crowded beaches, where you can mingle while sipping your favorite cocktails and have some fun, then Lummus Park Beach or Nikki Beach are the places for you. Want a more laid-back beach where you can relax and spend a nice day with family? As you go farther north, the beaches become a bit tamer. You can find public beaches all the way up the coast from Miami Beach to Surfside, to Haulover (looking for a dog beach, check this out…). Want to go south instead? Crandon Park in Key Biscayne is just a 13-minute drive from Brickell.

Attend Art Basel:

The biggest and trendiest art event there is, and it takes place in our city. If you are in Miami the first week of December, this event is the one you do not want to miss. Artists from all over the world come to our city to showcase their contemporary paintings, sculptures, photos, and films. Basel Week takes place in Miami Beach, but you can also enjoy events in Brickell and the most amazing installments and galleries in Wynwood. It doesn’t matter if you are artsy or not, trust us when we tell you that Art Basel Week is the place to be. A place you should definitely check out this year is PINTA Miami, they will be having amazing installations from world-renowned artists like Carlos Cruz-Díez, Carmen Herrera, Fernando Botero, Jesús Rafael Soto, and more. This year’s event starts on December 5th!

Go on a Shopping Spree:

Miami is known for a couple of things, and one of those is shopping. There’s a store for everyone! It doesn’t matter if you’re looking to shop high-end or if you want to be more mindful of your wallet. For some high-end shopping, visit the Miami Design District where you can find stores like Valentino, Dior, and Cartier. If you’re not in the mood to shop, we still encourage you to go just to see the amazing art installations displayed there. Plus, they have incredible cafes and restaurants. For “on-a-budget” kind of shopping, check out outlet malls like Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise and Dolphin Mall in Doral. Other great places to shop are Brickell City Centre, Aventura Mall, the Falls, Shops at Merrick Park and Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, a personal favorite close to home. Lincoln Road is also a wonderful place to shop and dine, or simply people-watch. Plus, it’s an outdoor mall so you can appreciate the cooler weather and not be as hot while walking around.

Stay in these Hotels:

A how-to guide of Miami is not complete without good hotel recommendations. The Hotel of South Beach is the perfect boutique-style hotel with modern luxury. It is walking distance from the beach and Lincoln Road -- two of our aforementioned winter activities are so accessible! Another awesome place to stay in the heart of Miami Beach is the Iberostar hotel. It is a 4-star hotel, and its decoration is inspired by the 1940s -- retro is in. If you want to stay on the iconic Ocean Drive, then the Celino hotel is an excellent option for you. Though it is not open just yet, you should probably start booking now… we have a feeling it’s going to be very sought after. If you are into the city vibes and want to stay in Brickell, then we recommend the East Hotel located in Brickell City Centre. This area is relatively new and full of shops and fun restaurants! Want to escape from the Miami lifestyle? Taking a cruise out of the Port of Fort Lauderdale? Looking to take a stay-cation? The Fort Lauderdale area is perfect for you. Stay at the B Ocean Hotel, which is walking distance from the beach and has awesome amenities and accommodations. Most hotels these days use some form of scenting to make your stay memorable (in the best way). We provide you with the best technologies and fragrances to do the same to your own home.

Sometimes Winter days in Miami can get cold for us locals. When the temperature drops to 60F you might see a few (or all) of us wearing winter jackets, scarves, and boots. We know this sounds silly to those of you who come from way up north, but if you don’t want to look like a tourist then you should maybe bring some -light- winter clothing to this trip. 😉
